As a backdrop was proposed for the rear of the stage, I was tasked with creating a cutting list and assembly diagram. This included detailing the measurements of each component, demonstrating how the pieces would be assembled, and providing a visualisation of the completed structure.

I was tasked with planning the positioning and quantity of stage legs and borders to effectively mask technical equipment. I then analysed audience sightlines from the worst-case seating positions to assess visibility and ensure that the equipment remained concealed.

I utilised cross-sectional and perspective views of the house to create an intimate sense of scale around the main character. This also highlighted the contrast between the minuscule house and the towering beanstalk, emphasising the dramatic difference in scale within the set.

After finalising the set rendering, I created a scaled model box to translate my proposed design into a physical white-card model. This allowed me to visualise the set in 3D and demonstrate how the various elements would come together in the actual stage space.

I was also tasked with curating costumes for the Peasant characters in Ah Boy & The Beanstalk. Based on the local context and the creative brief, the sketches called for the representation of occupations that are often underrepresented due to perceptions of being “dirty” or looked down upon.

As part of my RP Production Design module, I was tasked with designing and curating a costume for Goose in Ah Boy & The Beanstalk, a contemporary local adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk. As the creative brief had certain limitations, it challenged me to explore alternative ways to represent her character.

To emphasise Ah Cow’s character, I incorporated milk cartons with recycled white cloth to represent milk, alongside familiar supermarket labels such as “Halal” and “Dairy” to display her as edible meat with a barcode. Cow ears reinforced her character, while the hijab reflected Singapore’s multicultural identity.

Rather than creating a conventional black-and-white cap for the character, I chose to incorporate her personality into the costume by having her wear a hijab. To further reflect the playful nature of the character, I incorporated several tongue-in-cheek elements, including recycled materials such as used milk cartons and CDs.
